Assessment &
Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs)
Preliminary assessment of development proposals will indicate
the likely nature and extent of archaeological remains that might
be affected, and can help to suggest the best strategy for dealing
with those remains. They aim to provide an early identification
of archaeological and heritage issues and offer a sound basis for
risk identification and risk management.
Methods of assessment
may include:
- Walkover survey
- Review of documentary sources (e.g. county SMRs,
historic maps)
- Evaluation trenches
We will produce a concise, coherent document for submission in
support of a planning application. Where appropriate, these assessments
will include:
- Map regeneration exercises using standard SMR and
archive data to indicate past land uses
- Assessment of archaeological
survival at the site
- Relevant national
and local legislative and planning policy considerations
- Detailed
analysis of the archaeological impact of the proposed redevelopment
We also undertake the cultural heritage component of Environmental
Impact Assessments (EIAs). An Environmental Impact Assessment is
a process of environmental protection that aims to anticipate and
avoid negative environmental impact, including that which may impact
upon the historic environment, through a series of specialist studies
and professional evaluations. We aim to work closely alongside
developers to ensure that these surveys take place quickly and
efficiently.
